UNCG Offers a Double Dose of Jazz Sept. 26

GREENSBORO — The University of North Carolina at Greensboro will pulsate with modern jazz sounds when the university’s Jazz Band and Jazz Ensemble take the Recital Hall stage on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the School of Music.

The Jazz Band, directed by Arthur White, will begin the program with “All of Me.” The band will also perform Pat Metheny’s “Always and Forever,” “That’s All Right” by John Fedchock, “US” by Thad Jones and two selections by Bob Mintzer, “Tribute” and “Runferyerlife.”

After intermission, the Jazz Ensemble will continue the show with “Two Seconds to Midnight” and another Metheny tune, “If I Could.” Also on the program are “Wheeler Dealer” by Dean McNeil, “The Booze Brothers” by Frank Foster and “The Doomsday Machine Meets Mr. Gelato” by Ellen Rowe.
Director Steve Haines will lead the ensemble in the performance of one of his original compositions, “No Pain, No Gain.” His music has been broadcast on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's national radio shows "Jazz Beat" and "All the Best."

The UNCG Jazz Ensemble is the flagship of the Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program at UNCG.  It was founded in 1967 and has been featured in concerts on radio and television and throughout the United States, including a performance at Carnegie Hall in 1991. The ensemble is comprised of jazz studies majors and undergraduate and graduate students who are making jazz a major part of their musical training.

Tickets are available through the UNCG box office with locations in Aycock Auditorium and the School of Music or by calling (336) 334-4849, weekdays noon to 5 p.m. Prices are $8 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and $3 for students.
