DR. KAREN KILCUP  NAMED FOR FIU RESEARCH CHAIR

GREENSBORO--Dr. Karen Kilcup, an associate professor in the Department of English at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro,  has been named the 2000 Edna and Jordan Davidson Eminent Scholar Chair in the Humanities at Florida International University in Miami.

The endowed Davidson chair rotates among nationally-known scholars in the humanities. Her appointment for the fall semester of the 2000-2001 academic year will enable Kilcup to work on her current research project, "Poems, Readers, and Reviewers: Sentimentalizing Nationalism in Responses to American Poetry, 1820-1900."

Her project focuses on the contribution of periodical reviews and criticism to the construction of 19th-century American nationalism. In addition to sharing her work with graduate students at FIU, Kilcup will give public lectures and consult with faculty and students.

Kilcup, who received a U.S. national Distinguished Teacher award in 1987, is the author or editor of six books and numerous articles on American literature and culture. Her books include "Soft Canons: American Women Writers and Masculine Tradition" and "Native American Women's Writing c. 1800-1924: An Anthology." Kilcup joined the UNCG faculty in 1997, coming from the University of Hull in England. She is president of the American Humor Studies Association and is editor of its journal, Studies in American Humor.

She recently chaired the Foerster Committee of the Modern Language Association, which annually selects the best essay in the prestigious journal, American Literature.  Kilcup is regularly invited to give keynote addresses on American literature both in the U.S. and internationally. A graduate of Wellesley College, she holds master's degrees from the University of New Hampshire and Brandeis University and the Ph.D. degree from Brandeis University.
