UNCG BUSINESS FACULTY SPEAK AT CONFERENCE

GREENSBORO —Dr. Bradley L. Kirkman and Dr. Kevin B. Lowe, assistant professors of business administration at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, recently presented papers at the 60th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management held Aug. 5-9 in Toronto, Canada.

Kirkman’s paper was on “The Role of Procedural Justice, Perceived Organizational Support, and Individualism-Collectivism in Motivating Organizational Citizenship Behavior of Employees in the People’s Republic of China.”  It demonstrated that superior job performance among Chinese employees was more a matter of individual personality rather than whether employees believed that their organizations treated them fairly or not.  In the U.S., both personality and fairness perceptions matter to employees.

While attending the meetings, Kirkman also won the International Management Division’s “Outstanding Reviewer Award” in recognition of his “thoughtful, detailed, and high quality reviews of papers” submitted to the Academy for the Toronto meetings.
Kirkman has been at UNCG since 1996, and his research interests include work team effectiveness, international management, organizational justice, and organizational change and development.  He has conducted research and presented papers in several countries including Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Canada, England, Finland, France, Mexico, the Philippines, and Turkey.  Kirkman, a native of Greensboro, earned his MBA degree from UNCG and his Ph.D. in organizational behavior from UNC-Chapel Hill.

Lowe’s paper was titled, “Employee Reactions to Leader Power, Organizational Justice, and Organizational Support: Do They Differ in the People’s Republic of China Versus the U.S?” It showed that even though the countries are very different, employees in both China and the U.S. were more satisfied with their jobs and more committed to their companies when their leaders demonstrated expertise and led with integrity.

Lowe has been at UNCG since 1996, and his research interests include leadership, international human resource management, and high performance work organizations. He has conducted research and presented papers in Australia, Canada, Taiwan, Thailand, and Turkey. A native of Lexington, Ky., Lowe earned his Ph.D. in organizational behavior from Florida International University.

In the summer of 2001, Kirkman and Lowe will travel to China to conduct follow-up research at several Chinese organizations with Dr. George Chen, a professor at Hong Kong Baptist University.

The Academy of Management is a professional society primarily composed of professors who conduct research and teach management in colleges, universities, and research institutes.  The purpose of the academy is to foster the general advancement of research, learning, teaching, and practice in the management field.
