$100,000 Gift Establishes Kulynych Fellowship in Geriatric Nursing

GREENSBORO – Petro Kulynych has given a $100,000 gift in honor of his late wife to establish the Roena Bullis Kulynych Fellowship in Geriatric Nursing at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

He said his devoted wife, a 1941 graduate of Woman’s College, made his life a happy one.

“Fellowships like this one are invaluable in attracting to our program the best and brightest registered nurses who want to pursue studies related to the elderly, and supporting them during a rigorous course of study,” said Dr. Lynne Pearcey, dean of the School of Nursing.

“Countless seniors will benefit from this generous gift.”

Roena Bullis grew up in Wilkesboro and, after attending Woman’s College, married Petro Kulynych in 1943. They became the parents of two daughters, Brenda and Janice.

A member of Wilkesboro Baptist Church, Roena Bullis Kulynych served on the board of the Rainbow Center in North Wilkesboro, where a cottage for boys is named in her honor. She also helped build the Cherry Street Fire Station in Wilkesboro, a station dedicated to her father.

The son of Ukrainian immigrants, Petro Kulynych is a founding director of Lowe’s Companies Inc., the home improvement giant.

The North Carolina Planned Giving Council named Petro and Roena Bullis Kulynych philanthropists of the year in 1998. In 2001, the J. Paul Sticht Center on Aging and Rehabilitation at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center dedicated the Roena Bullis Kulynych Dementia Research Center in her honor.

Candidates for the Roena Bullis Kulynych Fellowship in Geriatric Nursing must be admitted to the Master of Science in Nursing Program, dedicated to a career caring for the elderly and enrolled as a full-time student – at least six hours per semester. The fellowship may be renewed for a second year.

The Graduate School will award the fellowship in coordination with the Office of Financial Aid and the School of Nursing Scholarship Committee.
