Jackson Library Sponsors Literacy Forum Jan. 29

GREENSBORO — Jackson Library at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro will host a community forum and information fair on local literacy efforts from 2-4 p.m. Thursday, Jan 29.

Scheduled speakers include:
o Gale Greenlee, Glenwood Branch, Greensboro Public Library;
o Wanda Parker, Reading Connections Inc;
o John Duberstein, Project HERE, Centro de Accion Latino; and
o Dr. Adrian Wurr, Department of English, UNCG.

The program in Cone Ballroom, Elliott University Center, is free and open to the public. Following the speakers, an information fair will allow attendees to learn more about organizations working in the fields of literacy and providing services to those for whom English is a second or other language.

The event is part of the 2003-2004 Race and Gender Institute, “Barriers to Learning: Issues in Literacy and Education from a Race and Gender Perspective.” The institute is considering ways that illiteracy and lack of education are barriers to women and people of color, and that literacy and education are springboards to opportunity.

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has said, “Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope.”

For more information, contact Gerald Holmes at 256-0273 or at Gerald_Holmes@uncg.edu, or visit Jackson Library's institute web page. Parking is available in the Walker Avenue Parking Deck on the UNCG campus.
