UNCG’s International Programs Center Welcomes New Leader
GREENSBORO – Dr. Lyn Lawrance first traveled around the world
when she was 19. The Sydney, Australia, native made the journey alone,
taking advantage of the airline benefits granted her father, an employee
of the Australian airline, Qantas. Since that first solo trek, she has
traveled the world several times, lived in New Zealand and moved to the
United States.
Not one to shy away from a golden opportunity, Lawrance, formerly the associate dean at UNCG’s School of Health and Human Performance, has accepted a new position as associate provost for international programs. She succeeds Dr. Charles Lyons, who founded the Office of International Programs at UNCG and retired Aug.1.
“Applying for the position was a great opportunity,” she said. “I will now have the ability to help others enjoy the experiences I have had. Plus, there is the added benefit of being able to serve in a new capacity at UNCG, where I feel a great sense of community.”
Lawrance will supervise an eight-member staff at the International Programs Center. The center is responsible for developing and coordinating the university’s international activities. It promotes departmental study abroad programs and manages more than 40 bilateral student and faculty exchange agreements. For more information about the center, visit www.uncg.edu/ipg/ipc.
Lawrance has been an educator at UNCG since 1985. She ascended from assistant professor of public health education to associate professor in the same department. In 1997, she was named associate dean of the School of Health and Human Performance. She previously taught at the University of Illinois – Urbana-Champaign, as well as Ballarat College of Advanced Education and Kambala Church of England School, both in Australia.
The avid traveler is not new to building university partnerships abroad.
She served on the International Programs Advisory Committee and as program
coordinator for Australian exchanges. In addition, she shared in developing
the report “The Future of International Programs at UNCG 2003-2008.”
