UNCG Theatre to Present Provocative “Marisol”

GREENSBORO — UNCG Theatre will perform “Marisol,” Jose Rivera’s apocalyptic vision of New York, in Taylor Theatre April 30 – May 4.
The play tells the story of Marisol Perez, a young Puerto Rican, whose sense of reality is challenged when her guardian angel reveals plans to overthrow a senile God.
“This play is launched by a wonderfully provocative premise – God is old and senile, and the angels are leading a revolt against him,” said Professor Jim Wren, the play’s director. “It suggests that we need to be more involved as individuals.”
Marisol must choose whether to fight alongside the angels or to remain on the sidelines. She also must struggle to survive her bizarre encounters in New York.
“It has been described as part ‘Paradise Lost’ and part ‘Mad Max,’ Wren said. “I would throw in a post-apocalyptic ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ and you just begin to capture the flavor of this world.
“As we enter our own age of ‘heightened alert’ and paranoia, this production seems particularly compelling.”
Jenny Greer will play Marisol, and Ciara Hardison will play her guardian angel. Gary Alexander is set designer, Andrew Liebchen is lighting designer, and Kelsey Hunt is costume designer.
The play, containing adult language and subject matter, is not appropriate for children.
Performance times are 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, April 30 and May 1; 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 2 and 3; and 2 p.m. Sunday, May 4.
Ticket prices are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and students and $5 for UNCG students. For more information, call the university box office at (336) 334-4849 or visit the Department of Theatre on the Web at www.uncg.edu/the.
