UNCG MATH PROFESSOR INVITED TO SPEAK IN CANANDA

GREENSBORO — Dr. Jerry E. Vaughan, professor of mathematical sciences at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, has been invited to speak at a special session in Toronto, Canada.

The American Mathematical Society will sponsor the session called "Set Theory and Set-Theoretic Topology" organized by Franklin D. Tall, professor at the University of Toronto, Sept. 23-24. Vaughan's topic, "On Spaces Related to Higher Cardinal Metrizable Spaces," will focus on the notions of limits, a topic in the foundation of mathematics used for example in calculus, and investigates the limit properties in the presence of higher cardinals.

A UNCG faculty member since 1973, Vaughan is director of graduate studies in the Department of Mathematical Sciences. He has previously been invited to deliver a series of lectures at Oxford University, UK; Oaxaca, Mexico; and Auckland University in New Zealand. He is Editor-in-Chief of the international research journal "Topology and its Applications," published by Elsiever, BV in Amsterdam. The journal will publish 27 issues with a total of 3,330 pages this year. Vaughan has also published over 50 research papers on mathematics and co-edited the book "Handbook of Set-Theoretic Topology". He received his doctorate from Duke University.
