CLASS OF 1951 DONATES $490,000 FOR MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS

GREENSBORO — The Woman’s College Class of 1951, recently donated $490,000 to be used for merit scholarships at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

When the class of 1951 graduated, they had the largest number of graduates, 469, to graduate up to that point.

Nancy Blanton Smith, the class President of 1951, which was also called the everlasting student body President, was very proud of her classmates. “I feel great about the fantastic job that we have done,” Smith said, who lives in Independence, VA. “I think that it is wonderful to donate the money towards merit scholarships to allow students to have a chance to experience college and get the degree needed to function in today’s world.”

Merit scholarships are essential to our ability to attract the best and brightest students, said UNCG Chancellor Patricia Sullivan.

“UNCG is a first choice for many students,” Sullivan said. “However their desire to enroll is often mitigated by financial considerations. My thanks goes out to the Class of 1951 for this wonderful gift, they are the ones that make it possible for a number of students to attend the University.”

The Merit Awards Program recognizes and encourages exceptional academic ability and talent. Scholarship winners are among the most outstanding students at UNCG and their achievements enrich and enhance the University. More than 50 renewable scholarships (ranging from $2,500 to $13,000 per year) are offered annually to entering freshmen. Merit Scholars are chosen primarily on the basis of superior scholastic and personal achievement. Scholarship winners generally have an SAT score of 1200 (or an ACT score of 27) and a minimum GPA of 3.5.

Awards are renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study.
