UNCG Campus Ministers to Discuss Middle East Conflicts Nov. 12

GREENSBORO—A discussion of the Middle East conflicts that may lead to war with Iraq will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

The program is titled “The U.S., Iraq, and Religion 101: A Conversation between UNCG’s Campus Ministers.” It is free and open to the public and will be held in Room 100 of Ferguson Building.

Zach Roberts, UNCG’s Baptist campus minister, is coordinating the program, which he says will be similar to TV’s “Politically Incorrect.” John Sopper of the religious studies faculty will serve as facilitator, and the ministers will speak their minds about the current conflict with Iraq. The audience can ask questions after the conversation, but Roberts says there’s a reason for the program.

“We as campus ministers believe that students are not taking seriously the threat of war with Iraq,” he said. “We hope that by having a conversation among ourselves, in their presence, we will accomplish something.”

The objectives include showing that people of faith and conviction, even professional ministers, have a hard time wrestling with the issues and complexities of war and peace. Audience members also will be challenged to look beyond their presuppositions and prejudices, and begin to dialogue with their peers. “The end result will be to make people aware of the issues,” said Roberts, “and hopefully to see that they are issues worthy of our attention and concern.”
