ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES MINOR TO BE
AVAILABLE TO UNCG UNDERGRADUATES

GREENSBORO--A new 18-hour academic minor in environmental studies will be available this fall for students at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

The new program is open to students in any academic major in the university and will lead to a minor in environmental studies. Courses will be drawn from the UNCG departments of biology, chemistry, geography, anthropology, political science, sociology and religious studies. It is being offered through the College of Arts and Sciences as a special program in liberal studies.

Director of the program will be Dr. Susan Buck, a UNCG associate professor in the Department of Political Science, who will also teach the "Introduction to Environmental Studies" (ENV 100) course. Information is available by calling her at 336-334-5144.

"Environmental studies is an interdisciplinary field fostering understanding of the natural physical and biological setting in which life on earth exists," said Buck. "It integrates scientific study of ecosystems, pollution, climate, energy and other environmental and natural resource matters on a global, regional or local scale with cultural and policy related study of politics, economics, sociology, history and law.

"This environmental studies minor is designed to provide students with a broad exposure to topics related to the environment and to provide knowledge and skills to address major environmental issues. It will provide an option for students who wish to have a formal designation for environmental studies placed on their transcript."

Buck noted that the minor will be of interest to students considering careers in a number of fields, including anthropology, biology, chemistry, conservation, education, environmental law, planning, public policy, geography, geology, political science, public health education, recreation, parks and tourism, and toxicology.

A UNCG faculty member since 1988, Buck is a specialist in environmental law and policy. She also is the author of the books, "The Global Commons" and "Understanding Environmental Administration and Law," and co-author of the book "Public Administration in Theory and Practice."  A graduate of the University of Florida, she received her master's and doctoral degrees from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
