Duffy Becomes First Moran Professor

GREENSBORO - Dr. Gerald G. Duffy has joined The University of North Carolina at Greensboro as the first William E. Moran Distinguished Professor in Reading and Literacy.

“Students, faculty and area teachers will benefit from his presence on campus,” said Provost Dr. Ed Uprichard. “He will be a valuable member of the UNCG community and I look forward to his arrival in January.”

Duffy, who received his doctorate in Reading and Language Arts from Northern Illinois University in 1966, spent 25 years at Michigan State University as a literacy educator. His research has focused on effective reading strategy instruction and on teacher development. Duffy has developed innovative alternative teacher education programs and taught at universities and schools throughout Asia, Europe and North America. In 2002, he was inducted into the Reading Hall of Fame.

The William E. Moran Distinguished Professorship in the School of Education was created by Charles A. Hayes, a champion of the Greensboro and UNCG community, to honor the university’s chancellor from 1979-1994. Hayes, who died in 2002, served at different times as president, chief executive officer and chairman of the board of Guilford Mills. Hayes served on the board of trustees at UNCG from 1980-1991.

“My personal relationship with Chancellor Moran made me a better person and encouraged me to better serve our community, state and nation,” Hayes said when the scholarship was established in 1998. “For that I will always be grateful.”

Moran guided the university during an era when it moved forward on many fronts. Enrollment increased from 9,925 in 1979 to 12,114 in 1993. UNCG added new bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs; raised $13.5 million in its first comprehensive capital campaign; moved from NCAA Division III to Division I in athletics; built new buildings; enlarged the campus; and saw the value of its endowment increase 11-fold.
