COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES
CREATES NEW DEPARTMENTS
GREENSBORO--The Department of Broadcasting/Cinema and Theatre at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro has been divided to create separate departments in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Dr. Walter H. Beale, dean of the college, made the announcement. The changes went into effect at the start of the academic year. Created were the Department of Theatre and the Department of Broadcasting and Cinema. The departments will be led by senior faculty members who will serve as interim heads for the 2000-2001 year: Thomas F. Behm in theatre and Anthony N. Fragola in broadcasting and cinema. During the year, both departments will be involved in searches for new department heads.
Beale had praise for the Department of Broadcasting/Cinema and Theatre. "This department contains some of the finest academic programming on this campus," he said. "The Master of Fine Arts degree program in theatre has been one of our premier arts programs for many years. At the same time, the undergraduate program in broadcasting/cinema is one of our most popular majors.
"The programs in the existing Department of Broadcasting/Cinema and Theatre are strong and well-developed as academic units. After much study and planning, we decided to divide the department. The new structure will allow all the programs in each area to continue to receive the attention they deserve."
Students will be able to earn the same degrees that were previously available. The Department of Broadcasting and Cinema, with eight full-time faculty members, offers the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees. The Department of Theatre has full-time faculty members and offers the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Fine Arts and the Master of Education degrees.
