UNCG Student Selected for Japanese Teaching Program
GREENSBORO – Kelly Nixon, a 2002 graduate of The University
of North Carolina at Greensboro and resident of High Point, has been selected
to participate in the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program.
She will depart for Japan on Saturday, July 26, and will spend one year as an assistant language teacher in Iwate. Nixon, one of approximately 1,700 finalists from the United States, received a bachelor’s degree in international business. She studied abroad at Nagoya University of Foreign Studies in Nagoya, Japan, during the 2000-2001 academic year.
The JET Program invites young college graduates to Japan to teach English in schools or to engage in international exchange activities at local government offices. The participants receive a generous stipend and round-trip airfare to Japan. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and have a bachelor’s degree. They are not required to have knowledge of the Japanese language. More than 31,000 U.S. citizens have taken part in the program since its establishment in 1987.
This program provides a unique opportunity for Americans to immerse themselves in Japanese culture through daily activities at schools and local government offices.
