UNCG Orchestra to perform Mendelssohn and Hindemith
GREENSBORO - The symphony orchestra of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro will perform Sunday, Oct. 26, at 3:30 p.m. in Aycock Auditorium. The program will feature two compositions by Felix Mendelssohn and one of Paul Hindemith’s symphonies.
The show will begin with Jaemi Loeb conducting Mendelssohn’s “Hebrides Overture, op. 26.” The piece will be followed by “Die Erste Walpurgisnacht, op. 60” (The First Witch’s Night), also by Mendelssohn and conducted by Dr. William Carroll. Mendelssohn’s affinity towards art, literature, nature and history has led many to label him a Romantic. He composed both of these pieces during the early 1830s.
Hindemith’s “Mathis der Maler” (Mathis of the Painters) symphony will follow. ‘Mathis’ was originally an opera that dealt with the themes of an artist in society, and asks if it is right for artists to value their work over politics and aiding humans in plight. It was written in 1934, a time when the German composer was critical of the Nazi Party. UNCG orchestra director Robert Gutter will conduct.
Tickets are available through the UNCG box office, with locations in Aycock Auditorium and the School of Music, or by calling (336) 334-4849, weekdays from noon to 5 p.m. Prices are $8 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and students and $3 for UNCG students.
