UNCG Orchestra Features New Faculty Cellist Dec. 9
GREENSBORO — Cellist Brooks Whitehouse, a new faculty member at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, will be a soloist with the University Symphony Orchestra in the final fall semester concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, in Aycock Auditorium.
Whitehouse, who performs internationally, will make a guest appearance in the orchestra’s performance of a Schumann cello concerto. Described by Whitehouse as “a passionate and very personal work,” the concerto reflects Schumann’s manic composing style, which moves from tortured to lyrical to fiery.
The orchestra’s program will also include Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony and Leoš Janá?ek’s “Sinfonietta.” UNCG director of orchestras Robert Gutter will conduct, with the assistance of graduate music student Richard Earl Cook, who will lead the Tchaikovsky piece.
Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for seniors, children and non-UNCG students and $3 for UNCG students. Tickets can be purchased by calling (336) 334-4849 or by visiting the university box office with locations in Aycock Auditorium and the School of Music, weekdays from noon to 5 p.m.
Whitehouse has performed with the Guild Trio, formerly in residence at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, for 13 years. The chamber music group has been featured on National Public Radio’s “Performance Today” and the University of Missouri’s public television series “Premiere Performances.”
He came to UNCG this fall after serving as assistant professor of cello and chamber music at the University of Florida. He currently performs as part of the Artist Faculty Chamber Series, the McIver Ensemble and with the Gate City Camerata, a string ensemble that includes faculty and students. He also leads the Music in the Atrium outreach series, which brings classical music into Moses Cone Hospital, and he continues to tour with the Guild Trio, which will soon make appearances in Philadelphia and Palm Beach.
