UNCG Students Inducted into Phi Beta Kappa

GREENSBORO – Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest and most prestigious of all college honorary societies, recently inducted students at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro as new members.

An induction ceremony was held April 30 with remarks on “Self-Esteem and Ethnicity?” by psychologist Dr. Bernadette Gray-Little of UNC-Chapel Hill. The students were elected to Phi Beta Kappa on the basis of their academic achievements in the liberal arts and sciences as undergraduates at UNCG. Phi Beta Kappa was established in 1776 at the College of William and Mary and there are only 262 chapters nationally. UNCG is one of only six institutions in North Carolina to have a chapter. Others are UNC-Chapel Hill, N.C. State University, Wake Forest University, Davidson College and Duke University.

Two of the students – Alison Erin Saulsbury of Manteo and Katherine Paige Collings of Sylva – received this year’s Elma Josephine Hege Awards of $500 each. The honor was created through a bequest to Phi Beta Kappa from Hege’s estate, with the purpose of assisting student members in pursuing academic, personal and professional enrichment experiences. Hege taught history at UNCG from 1941-71 and graduated from the institution in 1921. She was elected an alumni member of Phi Beta Kappa while on the faculty, and served on the executive committee for UNCG's Epsilon chapter from 1947-59. She died in 1991.
