U.S. News Ranks UNCG Programs Among Best in Nation
GREENSBORO – The University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s School of Education and programs in counselor education, speech-language pathology and clinical psychology are among the best in the nation, according to an annual ranking of graduate schools by U.S. News and World Report.
“I’m pleased that several of UNCG’s outstanding graduate programs have been recognized in this year’s rankings,” said Dr. James Petersen, dean of the graduate school. “This provides increased national visibility for graduate education at UNCG and helps us in recruiting highly qualified students for all our programs.”
The Department of Counseling and Educational Development is ranked sixth among counseling programs in the magazine’s 2005 list. The program was ranked fifth last year. The speech-language pathology program ranked 50th, and the clinical psychology program ranked 55th.
The School of Education, one of six professional schools at the university, is ranked 40th, placing it in the top 50 for the 10th consecutive year. Offering degrees at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels, the school has more than 50 full-time faculty members and about 1,600 students, including roughly 850 undergraduates and 750 graduate students.
The continued high ranking by the School of Education reflects its leadership role in the state and region, UNCG officials say. That leadership began in 1892 when the institution opened to train teachers as the State Normal and Industrial School.
