New Resources for
African American History
Will be Topic of
UNCG Conference March 19
GREENSBORO – “Documenting the African American Past,” a one-day symposium about new electronic information sources on the topic, will be held Friday, March 19, at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
The symposium will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Kirkland Room of Elliott University Center. It is sponsored by the UNCG Department of History and Old Salem Inc.
"We’ve organized this symposium to bring together leading experts in African American history who are also expert in the digitization of new source materials in their field,” said conference coordinator Dr. Karl Schleunes. “The information conveyed here will make a major contribution to disseminating material to scholars and students in the field of African American history."
Sessions will be 9-10:45 a.m., “New Sources of African American History”; 10:30-11:45 a.m., “Digitalization of Primary Sources”; and 1-3 p.m., “Public History and the African American Past.”
Discussing new information projects will be Leslie Rowland of the University of Maryland, Freddie Parker of N.C. Central University, Will Thomas of the University of Virginia, Susan Smulyan of Brown University, Jeffrey Harris of the National Trust, Macarthur Davis of the International Civil Rights Museum and Tim Bucknall of UNCG’s Jackson Library. UNCG moderators will be Dr. Loren Schweninger and Kathy Franz of the Department of History, and Dr. Frank Woods, director of the African American Studies Program.
