Russian Orchestra and Chorus Performing at UNCG Feb. 13

GREENSBORO – The Moscow State Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus will present an all-Rachmaninoff concert in Aycock Auditorium at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

The one-night-only performance is on the huge ensemble’s first U.S. tour since 1999 and is part of UNCG’s University Concert/Lecture Series. The performance will be conducted by Sergey Kondrashev, and the “Rhapsody” will feature piano soloist Yuri Rozum. Selections will include Sergei Rachmaninoff’s “Symphony No. 3 in A Minor, Op. 44,” “Three Russian Songs for Orchestra and Chorus, Op. 41,” and “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 43.”

The orchestra and chorus were created in 1978 to do weekly broadcasts throughout the Soviet Union. Soviet Premier Leonid Brezhnev decided that the orchestra should be based on the BBC Symphony Orchestra's radio series in the United Kingdom. Its repertoire is Russian symphonic music of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Its activities expanded into film work for Russian, European and American feature film productions, as well as Russian and European television.

The chorus is among Russia's prized musical possessions.  It specializes in operatic, symphonic and sacred music and has toured worldwide with the orchestra, and appeared in many international choral festivals. In addition to national performances, the orchestra and chorus have toured throughout Europe, along with five major tours of the United Kingdom and three tours of Australia and New Zealand, Japan, Korea, China and Hong Kong.

Ticket prices are $29, $25 and $19, depending on seating. To purchase tickets, visit the UNCG Box Office (336-334-4849), which has locations in Elliott University Center and the UNCG School of Music. Free parking is available behind the Weatherspoon Art Museum. Box office hours are noon-5 p.m., and on performance nights, 6-8:30 p.m.

Two UC/LS events remain: Feb. 28, the Moscow Festival Ballet performing “Cinderella,” and April 17, comedian Mark Russell, with tickets at $35, $30 and $25 each.
