UNCG MAY HELP COMPANIES REDUCE
ERRORS AND
INCREASE SPEED WITH ELECTRONIC DATA
RESEARCH
GREENSBORO — Large companies like Wal-Mart, that store huge amounts of electronic sales data and other information, could benefit from research being conducted by Dr. Fereidoon Sadri, a mathematical sciences professor, at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Sadri, who has done extensive research on database management, recently received a grant totaling more than $148,000 from the National Science Foundation. The grant, payable over three-years, will allow Sadri and his students to research an approach that could increase speed and efficiency for companies using data warehousing and data mining methods to store, process and query large amounts of information and facilitate multi-database interoperability. In data warehousing, operating data over long periods is summarized and stored. The warehouse data can then be analyzed for patterns and trends to improve operations that may assist businesses including retailers, supermarkets and insurance companies in determining sale strategies and predictions based on past data.
"Companies will be able to tap into other large data sources more quickly and efficiently and gather the information that specifically suit their needs," Sadri said.
Sadri says corporations experiencing mergers, like the proposed merger between Wachovia and First Union or even airline mergers, will also be able to integrate their databases more quickly and efficiently. Sadri will carry out the research with a team of graduate and undergraduate students, and hopes to enhance the development of human resources in science and engineering on both levels.
A UNCG faculty member since 1994, Sadri's research interests are in object-oriented databases, multi-databases, and management of uncertain and inaccurate information in databases. He has written more than 50 papers for scientific journals and conferences. Sadri received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from Tehran University, University of Washington, and Princeton University, respectively.
