Saxophone Alliance Comes to UNCG April 28-May 1

GREENSBORO – Jazz legend Dewey Redman, along with more than 200 of the nation’s finest saxophonists, will be on campus at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro School of Music April 28-May 1, when the North American Saxophone Alliance comes to town.

Public concerts and clinics at UNCG will feature the talents of distinguished saxophonists from the professional music world and distinguished academic institutions, as well as include music from classical and jazz genres.

“The NASA conference is held only every two years, and is the single largest event for saxophonists in the hemisphere,” said Steve Stusek, assistant professor of saxophone at the UNCG School of Music. “It is a great honor for us to be selected as host this time around. We have spent the past two years preparing and it looks like this will be one of the best conferences yet.”

The North American Saxophone Alliance is a national organization made up of professional performers, university professors, public school teachers, students, and others who have an interest in the saxophone. The Alliance disseminates information concerning the saxophone and provides performance opportunities for its members.

Public concerts will begin at 8 p.m. The schedule is:

Wednesday, April 28 – UNCG Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Robert Gutter, will perform in Aycock Auditorium. Guest soloists will be Fred Hemke, professor of saxophone at Northwestern University; Otis Murphy, faculty member at Indiana University; and Thomas Walsh, associate professor of saxophone and jazz studies at Indiana University in Bloomington. The program will include: Prokofiev’s “Lieutenant Kije Suite,” David Baker’s “Concerto for Jazz Saxophone and Orchestra” (world premiere), Robert Muczynski’s “Concerto for Saxophone,” and Mark Engebretson’s “Duo Concertante for 2 Saxophones and Orchestra.”

Thursday, April 29 – NASA Chamber Recital in the School of Music Recital Hall. Music will be performed by the New Century Saxophone Quartet, Capitol Quartet and Quatuor d'Anches, which features UNCG faculty members Steve Stusek (saxophone), Mary Ashley Barret (oboe), Kelly Burke (clarinet) and Michael Burns (bassoon). This concert will feature music by J.S. Bach, Thelonius Monk and others.

Friday, April 30 – UNCG Wind Ensemble, conducted by John Locke, will perform in Aycock Auditorium. The ensemble will be joined by the West Point Quartet, which is comprised of members from the U.S. Military Academy Band; Jeffrey G. Price, member of the U.S. Army Field Band; and Robert Faub, member of the Red Clay Saxophone Quartet and saxophone instructor at UNC Chapel Hill. Music will include: “Shortcut Home,” “Aria and Allegro for Soprano Saxophone and Wind Band,” “Squeeze,” “The Abundance Air: Concerto for Saxophone Quartet and Band” and “I Went to the Dance.”

Saturday, May 1 – UNCG Jazz Ensemble, directed by Steve Haines, will be joined by saxophonist Dewey Redman in Aycock Auditorium. Redman has toured and recorded with high school friend Ornette Coleman. The evening’s program will feature Redman’s compositions, which have been arranged and orchestrated by students in the UNCG Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program. It is the first time he has ever had his music orchestrated for large jazz ensemble. Featured works will be: “Joie De Vivre,” “Need to Be,” “Day Star Night Light,” “Tu-Inns” and “Boo Boo Doop,” among others.

Admission to each of the above concerts will be $8 for adults, $5 for seniors and students and $3 for UNCG students. In addition, there will be jazz jam sessions at Tate Street Coffee House at 10 p.m. Wednesday and Friday.
