G. Schirmer Opera Sampler to Include Music Students and Faculty
GREENSBORO - Music publisher G. Schirmer Inc. is producing 1,500 copies of a new promotional CD sampler, to be distributed free of charge to opera companies around the world. The University of North Carolina at Greensboro Opera Theatre’s recording of Mark Adamo’s "Little Women" has been chosen for this project.
The CD will contain excerpts from approximately 19 other operas and will be manufactured in the United Kingdom. The excerpts will be short—1 or 3 minutes in duration—with a total of 145 minutes on two CDs.
UNCG Opera Theatre sent the complete recordings of its Nov. 21 and 23 performances, which were approved by Adamo, and Schirmer chose four excerpts to be included in the sampler. Segments of the ensembles, “Truth or Fabrication” and "Let Me Look at You,” as well as two arias, “Perfect as We Are” and “Things Change, Jo,” were selected.
Nicole Asel, Renee Sokol, Rebecca Myers, Rhiannon Giddens and Daniel Stein are the UNCG singers who will appear on the recording. A booklet accompanying the CD will credit the UNCG Opera Theatre, and will list the singers' names, along with those of Marsha Paludan (stage director) and David Holley (producer/conductor and director of opera at UNCG).
“This is a great opportunity for us at the UNCG School of Music and Opera Theatre—to have our students heard and our name seen by such a large number of opera companies," Holley said. “Because Little Women has become such a popular opera, it is likely that our excerpts will be the most frequently played selections on the CD, as companies world-wide explore this truly wonderful work. Producing it last fall and having Mark Adamo work with our students and then attend opening night will be a highlight of my musical life for a long time to come."
