UNCG Theatre to Stage Shakespeare’s “Shrew”
GREENSBORO – “The Taming of the Shrew,” William Shakespeare’s classic battle-of-the-sexes comedy, will be presented at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro Oct. 24-Nov. 2.
The UNCG Theatre production is directed by graduate student Tim Bohn, who asks, “What is the basis for relationships between men and women? If this question is raised by the play, I think we’ve done our job.”
“The Taming of the Shrew” is a play-within-a-play. As it opens, a mischievous troupe of actors decides to play a practical joke on a tinker, Christopher Sly, whom they find drunk in an alehouse. They tell Sly that he is a lord, and the play they perform for him becomes the main action.
A rich young man, Lucentio, arrives in the Italian city of Padua to attend the university. There, he falls in love with Bianca, but he must compete with two other suitors. Also, Bianca’s father has ordered that Bianca may not be courted until her older sister, Katherine, is married.
Meanwhile, the brazen Petruchio arrives in Padua from Verona, intent on finding himself a wealthy wife. He agrees to marry the ill-tempered Katherine without meeting her. When he does first encounter Katherine, the two have a huge argument. Nonetheless, the two are wed, and the battle royal ensues.
David Griffie designed the sets, Zan Barnes designed the costumes, Matthew Fuller designed the lighting, and Lisa Bowers served as voice and text coach. Petruchio and Sly will be played by Ross DeGraw, Kate and the hostess will be played by Amy Blue, Bianca will be played by Jamie Dunn, and the lord and Lucentio will be played by Nathan Crocker.
The play will be performed in the Brown Building Theatre at 8 p.m. Oct. 24, 25 and 31, and Nov. 1; at 7 p.m. Oct. 29 and 30; and 2 p.m. Oct. 25 and Nov. 2. Free parking is available behind the Weatherspoon Art Museum.
To order tickets by phone, call (336) 334-4849 on weekdays between noon and 5 p.m. Tickets also are available at the University Box Office and one hour before curtain time at the Brown Building Theatre.
