Exercise Professor Honored for Injury Research
GREENSBORO – Dr. Sandra J. Shultz, assistant professor in exercise and sport science at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, has been chosen as the recipient of the 2003 Freddie Fu New Investigator Award.
The award is presented by the National Athletic Trainers Association, Research and Education Foundation. Fu is a professor in orthopedic surgery and medicine at University of Pittsburgh and is known worldwide for his pioneering surgical techniques to treat sports-related injuries.
Shultz’s research has focused on knee injuries in female athletes, including neuromuscular risk factors associated with the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). She is now developing a research program to investigate anatomical and hormonal risk factors for their contribution to knee stability and greater risk of ACL injury in women.
Shultz is director of graduate programs in athletic training and sports
medicine for the School of Health and Human Performance. She earned her
bachelor’s degree from California State University, Fullerton, her master’s
degree from University of Arizona and her doctorate from University of
Virginia. Before achieving her doctorate, Shultz was the associate director
of athletic training and rehabilitation at UCLA.
