SMITH-SOTO MANUSCRIPT HONORED
GREENSBORO--"Green Mango Collage," a poetry manuscript written by Dr. Mark Smith-Soto, a professor of Romance Languages at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, is the winner of this year's Persephone Poetry Book Publication Award.
The competition, sponsored by the North Carolina Writers' Network, is open to poets who teach or serve as editors of poetry magazines. The prize is publication of 100 copies of the winning manuscript in book form. The annual award encourages a teaching poet or workshop leader by supporting publication of his/her first or second book. Smith-Soto is invited to read from his poetry at Weymouth in Southern Pines on June 24.
A UNCG faculty member since 1975, Smith-Soto is a former head of the Department of Romance Languages. In 1997, the University honored him with the senior Alumni Teaching Excellence Award. His academic specializations are contemporary poetry and Spanish-American literature. A widely published poet, he has served as editor of the International Poetry Review since 1992. He is the author of two books, "Jose Asuncion Silva: Contexto y estructura de suobra" and "El arte de Alfonsina Storni." Smith-Soto received his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley.
