UNCG Awards Carlisle Professorship to Faculty Member

GREENSBORO – The University of North Carolina at Greensboro has awarded Dr. Paige Hall Smith the Linda Arnold Carlisle Professorship in Women’s and Gender Studies for 2004-06.

The two-year professorship is awarded to tenured or tenure-track faculty who contribute to the Women’s and Gender Studies Program. The professorship provides $32,000 over two years for salary supplements and research that enhances the program.

Smith’s research project is “Breastfeeding – Critical Feminist Issue or Regressive Practice? Using Women’s Experiences to Link Feminist Theory to Breastfeeding Practice and Promotion.” The work aims to develop a feminist approach to breastfeeding.

Dr. Smith has served as interim director of the Women’s and Gender Studies Program while director Mary Ellis Gibson has been on a Fulbright scholarship in India.
