DR. EILEEN KOHLENBERG INITIATES NURSE MENTOR PROGRAM

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The North Carolina Center for Nursing has awarded a $5,000 grant to Dr. Eileen
Dr. Eileen Kohlenberg
Kohlenberg, assistant dean in the School of Nursing at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and co-chair of the Nursing Workforce Alliance/Greensboro AHEC, to implement a mentoring program for student nurses.
The grant enables the Alliance to connect students who are between sophomore and junior years with nurses so they can observe and practice at a basic level in the hospital setting. Fourteen UNCG students spent this past summer working with nurses in area hospitals, thanks to the grant. Kohlenberg, principle investigator, said the plan is to expand the program next summer to include nursing students at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Hospitals participating in the partnership are Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Alamance Regional Medical Center, High Point Regional Hospital, Duke University Medical Center, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and Novant Health.
Kohlenberg’s work reflects the University’s motto, “Service,” and the School of Nursing's active involvement in community outreach. Other successful service programs initiated by UNCG nursing faculty include: free walk-in clinics and house calls in Greensboro’s retirement communities; “College Bound Sisters,” a nationally-recognized adolescent pregnancy prevention program serving Guilford County; “Point 4 the Future,” a campaign to educate young women statewide about the importance of taking folic acid to prevent birth defects, and the establishment of a Red Cross training program for disaster relief nurses.
The School of Nursing at UNCG is the largest in North Carolina, with a master’s in nurse anesthesia program ranked 8th by US News and World Report. In addition to offering its BSN and RN-to-BSN degrees, the school offers numerous other master’s and certificate programs which make it possible for practicing nurses to continue their education.
