Dark to Serene: UNCG Dance Department Showcases Variety
GREENSBORO – The UNCG Department of Dance will present the Spring Departmental Dance Concert on Friday, April 25, at 8 p.m. and Saturday, April 26, at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Dances will feature the choreography of Jennifer Mitchell, B.J. Sullivan, John Gamble, Barry Stoneking, and Katerina Antoniadou.
Five dances will be performed:
· BENEATH THE TABLE is a suite of three solos danced by Erin Guthe, Sarah Nelson, and Meredith Starnes, and choreographed by Jennifer Mitchell. The piece is set to traditional music from the Middle Ages, and is often called the Portuguese answer to the Blues. Each of the three solos was made with a particular predicament in mind.
· B.J. Sullivan will present continuing on/off observing spearing survival. Using release technique, B.J. has choreographed this driven work for 12 dancers enrolled in the Performance Theory and Practice course. The dance deals with surviving life and all its challenges, and it is set to the music of Dave Heath and Steve Reich.
· THE LATE, LATE, LATE, LATE, LATE SHOW was choreographed for John Gamble's Intermediate Dance Repertory. This piece is a romp, in dance and music, through the dark forests and empty attics of the horror film genre. The sound score uses music from Halloween, The Fog, The Omen, Psycho, and Addam's Family Values. Costumes parody the high school Goth scene. Ideas and movement images are contributed by the cast of 23 dancers and choreographed by Gamble.
· Katerina Antoniadou will present a work entitled VASCILATING CURRENTS holding on to the past, striving for a future. This dance work represents the continuous passage through time, the tendency to hold on to our roots as we strive for a future. The dance flows like a river, showing moments of peace and serenity as well as struggle, excitement and passion. The piece features dancers, Laura Arrington, Amanda Floyd, Erin Guthe, Kimberly Herndon, Melissa Jackson, and Love Muwwakkil.
· DREAMING IN COLOR, choreographed by Barry Stoneking, who currently teaches Choreography to dance students at UNCG, will feature the dancing of Katerina Antoniadou, Laura Arrington, Lily Culp, Camille DeSantis, and Melissa Weston. Conceptualized from dream imagery/altered consciousness, this playful and compelling piece of choreography has been called “odd” and “other worldly” by the Winston-Salem Journal. It is performed to the music of Samuel Barber and Art of Noise.
Performances will take place in the UNCG Dance Theater on Walker Avenue and parking is available at the Walker Avenue Parking Deck. Tickets can be purchased through the University Box Office at (336) 334-4849.
