Student Excellence Awards Presented
GREENSBORO The following students at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro to receive Student Excellence Awards, the institutions top honor, at the annual Honors Convocation held May 7 on campus.
Only juniors and seniors are eligible to receive the awards. The students were chosen from approximately 5,000 UNCG juniors and seniors and represent a select group. Nominees for the awards must have overall grade point averages of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. Speaker for the event was H.T. Tom Kirby-Smith.
The students were nominated by faculty from the departments in which they are majoring. Nominations were evaluated by the Student Excellence Awards screening committee, with final selections made by the UNCG Honors Council. The awards were established in 1971 to recognize UNCG juniors and seniors with outstanding academic accomplishments. Recipients of the awards must be judged "superior to other able students" in such qualities as intellectual talent, analytic or critical ability, creativity, originality and initiative, and perseverance in academic pursuits. Winners are:
Guilford County Helen M. Peastrel of High Point, music and computer science; Jameson J. Bennett, art; Edward E. Duehring, psychology; Kristin A. Gale, human development and family studies; Robert W. Huigens, biology; Altijani H. Hussin, economics; Jon C. Rogowski, political science; and Elizabeth M. Walton, biology and religious studies; all of Greensboro.
Forsyth County Alyson Haines Covington of Winston-Salem, nursing, and Thomas Delaney Santoro of Tobaccoville, biochemistry.
Mecklenburg County Ross M. Lafleur of Matthews, music; Vivian F. Bynoe, human development and family studies, and Emily Laine Dornblazer, psychology, both of Charlotte
Asheboro Carolyn K. Sanzenbacher of Asheboro, philosophy.
Boone Justin A. Lee, exercise and sport science
Burlington Scot D. Aitcheson, communication studies, and Mary Elizabeth Nunes, exercise and sport science.
