UNCG CHANCELLOR NAMED TO SACS COMMISSION
GREENSBORO — Chancellor Patricia A. Sullivan of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro has been elected to the 77-member Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
The commission accredits more than 780 universities and colleges throughout the Southeastern region of the United States. Commissioners are charged with preparing a statement of standards for institutional memberships, recommending membership dues and assessments; conducting reviews and taking final action on the accreditation of collegiate institutions and reviewing reports from appointed study commissions.
Sullivan has served as chancellor of UNCG since Jan. 1, 1995. Since arriving, she has led the institution through the successful Second Century Campaign for UNCG, which raised $55.4 million. She also has worked to make the case for state appropriations, including $45.9 in funding for UNCG’s planned Science Building. Major capital improvements completed during her term include a $25.8 million School of Music building, a $5.4 million baseball stadium and student recreation facility and a $3.2 million Spring Garden Street renovation project. Currently under way is a $22 million renovation project for Elliott University Center.
A native of Staten Island, N.Y., Dr. Sullivan is a graduate of St. John’s University, and earned master’s and doctoral degrees from New York University. She received her Ph.D. degree in biology. She earlier held key leadership positions in both North Carolina and Texas. She came to UNCG from Texas Woman’s University, where she was vice chancellor for academic affairs for seven years. She also was interim president there for a year. From 1981-87, she was dean of the college at Salem College in Winston-Salem.
SACS is one of six regional accrediting organizations in the U.S. Its membership consists of more than 12,000 accredited public and private institutions from university level down to pre-kindergarten. Founded in 1895 and headquartered in Decatur, Ga., SACS works with schools and colleges in 11 Southern states from Virginia through Texas, the Caribbean and in Central America and South America.
