“Woody Guthrie’s American Song” Opens Thursday, Aug. 22

GREENSBORO —    “Woody Guthrie’s American Song”, a rousing musical celebration of the American spirit, opens 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22 in Taylor Theatre at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Featuring music by the master of the American folk genre, Woody Guthrie, the play is held over from UNCG’s Summer Repertory Theatre season. Tickets are available at the door or by calling the University Box Office at 334-4849 weekday afternoons starting Aug. 19. The show runs through Sunday, Aug. 25.

Directed by Tom Humphrey, head of the Department of Theatre, the production takes the audience on a rail journey across America, from the burgeoning West through the Dustbowl country, to the factories of New York City. Along the way are other rail-riders -- men looking for honest work during the Depression, families looking for a home, union organizers, and romantic, guitar and harmonica-playing drifters.

Depicting these characters are theatre students Nathan Anderson, Amy Blue, Brandon Ellis, Jenny Greer,  Zack Hemenway and Kim Stauffer. Set design is by John Wolf, lighting is by Joshua Reaves and costumes are by Lisa Tireman.

Only Woody Guthrie could paint this uplifting musical picture of America, with familiar songs such as “Nine Hundred Miles” and “This Land Is Your Land.” ###
