UNCG Students Bring Back Awards from Theater Competition
GREENSBORO — Theater graduate student Kim Stauffer of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro took a top award at the American College Theatre Festival’s southeastern regional event.
Stauffer received the Classical Acting Award, which recognizes the outstanding performance of classical material in the Irene Ryan scholarship competition. The competition, with more than 300 students, was among the ACTF events Feb. 4-9 in Savannah, Ga.
At the same event, a play written and directed by Tim Bohn, a graduate student, was named the best of more than 80 entries in the Ten Minute Play Competition. John Spiegel, also a graduate student, won the region’s Student Director Fellowship.
Bohn and Spiegel will showcase their work at the national Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival April 14-20 in Washington, D.C.
Deb Orzechowski is among six design students nationwide who have been invited to attend the festival. She is being honored for the high quality of her work during her three years as a graduate student at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
The awards for the three students invited to Washington include travel, lodging and per diem expenses, and will allow them to attend workshops and performances at the festival.
At the regional festival, undergraduate Samson Baker and Stauffer were among 16 finalists in the Irene Ryan scholarship competition. Ryan is best known for her portrayal of feisty Granny Clampett in “The Beverly Hillbillies.”
UNCG theatre students also won numerous design awards at the regional
competition:

First place, Marlaina Seay for “Peer Gynt”
Second place, Orzechowski for “Peer Gynt”

First place, Andrew Liebchen for “The Hobbit”
Second place, Joshua Reaves for “The Hobbit”
· Scenery
First place (tie), Vandy Wood for “Hansel and Gretel” and Orzechowski
for “Peer Gynt”
Honorable mention, Liebchen for “Lysistrata”
