Events Planned at UNCG to Celebrate Women’s History Month

GREENSBORO – The Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS) Program at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro has a diverse series of events scheduled for Women’s History Month.

Some of the programs will carry over into April. For more details, call the WGS program at UNCG at 336-334-5673. All of the following events are free and open to the public, unless otherwise stated:

Wednesday, March 17, 9-11 a.m. – The Women in Leadership series and the Bryan School of Business and Economics will present a lecture by investment executive Carrie Schwab-Pomeranz designed to help women investors. She is vice president for consumer education at Charles Schwab & Co. Inc., and the founder of Schwab’s Women’s Investing Network. Room 416 Bryan Building.

Thursday, March 18, 5-7 p.m. – “Colloquium on Women and Public Speaking,” a presentation and book signing by Jody Natalle and Fritzi Bodenheimer. Natalle and Bodenheimer are the authors of “The Women’s Public Speaking Handbook.” The handbook is a guide that every woman can use to enhance techniques on a public platform. A reception and book sale will follow. Room 201 Science Building.

Saturday, March 20, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. – The 6th Annual Shades of Color Conference, “Creating Change to Impact the Future.” Admission. Keynote speakers are George Mendoza, a world class runner and Olympic contender who lost his vision at age fifteen, and leadership trainer Aminata Njeri. Call the Office of Multicultural Affairs at UNCG at 334-5090 for information on registration. Elliott University Center (EUC).

Wednesday, March 24, 1-2 p.m. – “Gender Issues, Institutional Access and Achievement for African American College Students.” The research presentation will feature UNCG faculty members Robert Aronson, Department of Public Health Education; Willie Baber, Department of Anthropology; and Desmond Patton, undergraduate student. Multicultural Resource Center, EUC.

Tuesday, April 6, 3:30 p.m. – “Women’s Use of Violence in Intimate Relationships,” Linda Carlisle Professorship Lecture. Dr. Suzanne Swan of the Department of Psychology and the Women’s Studies Program at the University of South Carolina will present data from her studies of women who have been physically abusive with male intimate partners. Alumni House.

Wednesday, April 14, 3:30 p.m. – “When Bad Things Happen to Girls: The Relationship of Victimization to Risky Behaviors.” A lecture by Dr. Jacquelyn White, UNCG professor of psychology, who will discuss her research studies conducted as the Linda Arnold Carlisle Professor of Women’s at Gender Studies. Alumni House.

Tuesday, April 20, 2 p.m. – “Anna Julie Cooper’s Black Woman of the South, the Hidden Origins of Social Theory,” a lecture by Charles Lemert, Andrus Professor of Sociology at Wesleyan University. Anna Julie Cooper, the daughter of an enslaved African woman and her white master, was educated and ultimately earned her doctoral degree. Cooper was the fourth African-American woman to obtain such a degree. School of Music Recital Hall.

Thursday, April 29, 3:30 p.m. – “Letters from Paris: A German Woman’s View from Post Revolutionary France,” a lecture by Karin Baumgartner, recipient of the Linda Arnold Carlisle Research Grant. Faculty Center.
