Counseling Department to Present New Faculty Workshops
GREENSBORO – The Department of Counseling and Educational Development
at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro will present a series
of “New Faculty – New Skills” workshops. The purpose of these workshops
is to introduce the department’s new faculty and allow them to share their
expertise with the academic and local communities.
Event Schedule:

Friday, Oct. 31, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. – Dr. José Villalba will present,
“Impacto: Addressing the Needs of Hispanic / Latino Children and Adolescents.”
Villalba will present interventions and strategies to help counselors meet
the counseling needs of the growing number of Latino children in their
schools.

Friday, Nov 14, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. - Dr. Kelly Wester will present, “Cutting
and Other Self-Injurious Behaviors (SIB).” The focus of this workshop is
to give people a better a better understanding of SIB. Wester will explain
how to identify SIB clients, and describe behaviorally based interventions
that have been successful in treating them.

Friday, Jan. 30, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. – Dr. Shawn Spurgeon will present,
“The Impact of Our Surroundings: African American Male Identity Development.”
Spurgeon will explain African American male adolescent behavior and development
from a family systems perspective. This workshop will teach strategies
that can be used by counselors and parents in working with this population.

Friday, Feb. 6, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. – Dr. Todd Lewis will present “Reframing
Resistance.” Motivational interviewing (MI) is a new tool designed to cultivate
a motivation toward change in clients and their families, including those
with substance abuse. Dr. Lewis will explain key MI concepts and strategies
that are appropriate for counseling settings.
All workshops will take place in the Kirkland Room of Elliott University
Center. Parking will be available in the Walker Avenue Parking Deck. For
