Young Writers’ Conference March 1 at UNCG
GREENSBORO—More than 700 students from public and private schools
throughout the Piedmont will attend the Piedmont UNCG Young Writers’ Conference
on Saturday, March 1, at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
The purpose of the conference, which runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., is to highlight the creative process of writing and sharing stories. Children attending have been selected by their teachers in grades K-8 because of the books they have independently written and produced.
The Center for Educational Studies and Development at UNCG is hosting the event, which has been held for the past 12 years and has drawn over 10,000 children. More than 140 N.C. Teaching Fellows and student volunteers in the UNCG School of Education will be working with the event.
Featured speaker this year will be author-illustrator Clay Carmichael of Carrboro, whose children’s books include “Lonesome Bear,” “Used-Up Bear” and “Bear at the Beach.” She is a contributing author to “The Secret to their Success/How 33 Women Made Their Dreams Come True” and “The Long Way Around/How 33 Women Found the Lives They Love.” She is a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill.
“The goal of the Young Writers Conference is to encourage students to
become more literate as they form a connection between reading and writing,
and to gain the feeling of satisfaction of creating a work and sharing
it with others," said Jane Shoemaker, conference coordinator.
Each child attending the conference will attend a session with Carmichael,
participate in three workshops for their specific grade levels, and meet
with a small discussion group to share their books. Sessions will
be held in the Curry, Ferguson and Graham buildings.
