9th Grade Girls Invited to Transitions Program Sept. 22
GREENSBORO – Triad 9th grade girls, parents and other interested adults are invited to a free program of workshops at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro on Sunday, Sept. 22, to begin understanding and talking about the myriad issues girls confront upon first entering high school.
Sponsored by the Women’s Studies Program and the Women’s Studies Initiative for Girls, “Transitions” is part of their ongoing efforts to promote the positive development of girls. It is scheduled for 1 – 5:30 p.m. in the Health and Human Performance Building on Walker Avenue, with parking available in the Walker Avenue deck. Refreshments will be provided. To ensure first choice of sessions, participants are encouraged to pre-register by calling 334-5673, or e-mailing womens_studies@uncg.edu. Convenient online registration is available at http://www.uncg.edu/wms/transitions.htm
One purpose for “Transitions” is to awaken students and parents to issues of race, sexuality, class and physical differences among high school students, and how these issues can affect girls. It is hoped it will spark dialogue among girls, the significant adults in their lives, schools and the community. Separate, age-appropriate programs are available for adults and girls, each of which has similar topics.
Participants can select from an array of presentations taking place in four, 40-minute sessions. Presenters include Chapel Hill author Jean Anspaugh, whose nationally-famous book, “Fat Like Us,” examines the dieting culture in Durham and the cultural biases overweight people must struggle against. Anspaugh will discuss “Body as Voice: Effects of Weight and Appearance.” Other topics include health and sexuality; healthy peer relations and peer pressure; how to talk to a teacher; yoga; academic success; dance therapy; self-defense, and substance abuse prevention. ###
