UNCG Library Placing World War II Oral Histories, Documents Online
GREENSBORO – World War II is a hot topic for history buffs these days, so they will be happy to learn that The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is improving online access to its popular Women Veterans Historical Collection.
Thanks to a $13,400 grant from the State Library of North Carolina, the university’s Jackson Library is now adding the transcripts of 125 oral histories from World War II veterans to its Web site at http://www.wvhp.org The funding will also enable many new images of posters and artifacts from World War II to be displayed on the site, where hundreds of pictures and documents from the collection are already available.
The originals of these -- as well as thousands of documents and items from other wars and eras -- are available to visitors to the Special Collections division on the second floor of Jackson Library. The Women Veterans Historical Collection is believed to be the largest and most comprehensive collection on the subject anywhere, and it continues to grow. Since the library established the collection in 1998, it has amassed thousands of primary source documents, including diaries, letters, and oral histories, as well as artifacts, recruitment posters, uniforms and memorabilia. In demand almost daily by writers and historians all over the world and attracting regular media attention, it is one of the most popular special collections in Jackson Library.
Many of the women who have contributed oral histories have since passed away, but their words live on in the tapes and transcripts at Jackson Library. People may call 334-4045 to find out more about the collection or inquire about contributing.
