GREENSBORO -- When immigrant and refugee youth come to the Triad area, one of the things they find remarkable is the many different faces from many different places all over the globe. They might not realize that under the surface, youth from all cultures share similar questions and concerns, ranging from what to do about drug and alcohol abuse in the family, to where to get access to health care and information, to how to apply for financial aid for college.
Young newcomers are invited to discuss these and other issues together at "Faces Around Us!" from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4. The free event is sponsored by the Center for New North Carolinians at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and takes place in Bryan Building on Stirling Street. Transportation can be provided in Guilford County with advance notice. For information or to register, call the Center at (336) 334-5411. Parking is available on street or in the Walker Ave. parking deck next to Bryan Building. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.
The day will be devoted to informal discussions of topics that affect
everyday life of teens everywhere. Topics on the program include: alcohol,
tobacco and other drugs, social responsibility, racism, financial aid for
higher education, sharing and learning about other cultures, environmental
concerns, political issues, career and business development and educational
resources within the community. Presenters will be peer mentors and other
community organizers who work closely with immigrant and refugee communities.
