Graduate Program: Required Integrative Experience for Master's Degree Students

The purpose of the required integrative experience is to draw together knowledge learned in the master's degree program and apply it toward analysis and solution of scholarly or professional problems. An integrative experience cannot begin until the student has completed (or is currently enrolled in) at least 2/3 of the course work required for the degree.

Thesis/Project Option

Completion of a thesis (KIN 699) or project (KIN 698) constitutes an integrative experience that satisfies this requirement for students who select this curriculum option.

Course Work Only Option

There are several integrative experiences from which to choose that satisfy this requirement for students who select this curriculum option. The student, with approval of his/her advisor, should make a selection that is most relevant to his/her professional and scholarly goals. A brief paragraph outlining the nature of the selected integrative experience, and the evaluation process and criteria, must be signed by the student's advisor and any other members (as appropriate) who have agreed to be involved. This should be attached to the student's record of progress, and placed in the student's permanent file prior to beginning the activity.

The integrative experience must be selected from the following (if a course is selected the hours are included as part of the 36 hours required for this option):

1. Comprehensive Examination. The student's advisor and two other Graduate Faculty members (see above), in consultation with the student, develop one comprehensive examination question that requires integration of various bodies of knowledge related to the student's course of study. The question should also be related to the student's particular professional focus. The student may use the full range of available scholarly resources including discussion with faculty in developing his/her answer. The completed answer must be submitted within six weeks after receiving the question. All three faculty members evaluate the question using "pass" and "not pass" standards.

   If the student fails to pass the examination, the committee may require the student to rewrite the question or answer a new question.

2. KIN 595 Exercise Science/Fitness Internship.

4. KIN 697 Field Practicum in Kinesiology.
5. KIN 695 Independent Study.
