- 10/27/98 Jackson Library Hosts Miniature Book Exhibit
Miniature books have fascinated collectors for centuries. Even before Gutenberg, little books containing
illuminations were crafted by hand, and miniature books were among the first produced by printing
presses. Today, they are still being created by a small number of publishers who care about preserving
the art.
From now until December 1, visitors to Jackson Library can enjoy an exibit entitled "Miniature Books
Today," which consists of 125 books together with photographs of collectors and publishers. The exhibit,
which is in the Library's main lobby, was created by the Miniature Book Society. The Society is a
non-profit organization whose purpose is to encourage the love of miniature books and to provide a forum
for the exchange of information about them.
Miniature books are real books, usually no more than three inches tall. Some are so tiny they can only be
read with magnification. There are books on all subjects -- Bibles, biographies, stories, songbooks,
hymnals, poetry and cookbooks. Bindings come in all shapes and forms from a variety of materials, and
often enhance the appeal of the little books. Many private collectors have sought the tiny books and
have enjoyed this unique hobby.
- 10/6/98 Access to MDX Health Digest to be Discontinued October 12, 1998
UNCG will no longer provide access to the FirstSearch database MDX Health Digest as of October 12, 1998.
Instead broader coverage of health related topics will be available on Health Source Plus which is provided
through the statewide NC Live initiative. If you need further assistance please ask the Reference Department to help you to find an alternative
database.
- 10/5/98 Interlibrary Loan Forms Now Available on JACLIN Web Online Catalog!
For several years the capability to enter interlibrary loan requests via an electronic form has existed
in the telnet version of JACLIN Plus. Now that same feature is available in the Web version of JACLIN
where it is possible to click on the ILL Form .
This service is available to graduate students, faculty and staff.
The online Book Request Form is an other popular service that has been available in the telnet version of
JACLIN Plus. This capability also exists in the Web version of JACLIN and is located under
the Suggestion Box .
As the Library moves forward with its development of a new system based on the Web interface, it will be
necessary to discontinue certain features formerly available in the telnet version of JACLIN. The ILL
forms and the Book Order Request Form under JACLIN Options can no longer be supported as of October 12,
1998, so the JACLIN Web version must be used for those services from that day forward.

- 9/9/98 Telnet access to JACLIN Plus has changed!!
Anyone wanting to use Telnet for remote access to the UNCG online catalog, JACLIN Plus, must use a
new address: jaclin.uncg.edu effective immediately. This change replaces the former
address of steffi.uncg.edu and is needed to assure continuous access to JACLIN Plus when
the Library's database is moved to a new machine in October.
- 9/1/98 JACLIN Plus not available October 11th during Fall Break.
The Library's Online Catalog, JACLIN Plus, and other online resources offered by the Library will
not be available Sunday evening, October 11. This disruption of service is
necessary to move JACLIN from
the VAX computer "Steffi" to its new home on the Alpha machine, "Mickey." Although JACLIN should
be available once again on Monday, October 12, there could be some system instability related to
the move. When classes resume on Wednesday, October 14, JACLIN should be back fully in service.
Moving JACLIN to a different platform is the first step of implementing the Library's "new
generation" online integrated system, which will include an updated and much improved version
of the JACLIN Web catalog that should be available by spring semester, 1999.
