Spring 2006 Internship Available at the Forest History Society
The Forest History Society is a non-profit educational institute that links the past to the future by identifying, collecting, preserving, interpreting and disseminating forest and conservation history information. It is located in Durham, N.C. and affiliated with Duke University. The Forest History Society Archives is seeking applicants for a student internship. The internship is intended to introduce a student to work in a history society archives, and to assist the staff in organizing new collections. The Archives is the official repository for several national forestry or conservation organizations and also collects the papers of individuals who have played an important role in the profession of forestry or the conservation movement. More information is available at: http://www.lib.duke.edu/forest/Research/archmain.html. The intern will work under the supervision of the Librarian and the Assistant Archivist. The primary job of the intern will be processing, but other duties may include answering inquiries, photocopying, and retrieving materials from storage.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK: It is expected that the intern will complete processing of a small collection, to include an appraisal, organization, arrangement, and description, and carrying out of routine preservation measures, such as refoldering and photocopying. Intern can choose from several recently acquired collections.
HOURS AND SALARY: This is a temporary position (10 hours per week) with funding for a14 week period any time between January 1 and June 30, 2006. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. The salary is $11.00 per hour. The appointee is not eligible for benefits.
QUALIFICATIONS: Enrollment in a graduate program in library science, history, or public history with archival processing experience; familiarity with research in primary sources; strong written communication skills;reliability; attention to detail; ability to lift boxes and climb ladders; respect for privacy and confidentiality Recent graduates of archival education programs are welcome to apply, but we expect a 14 week commitment on the part of the person hired.
