INDEPENDENT STUDY
LIS608 Independent Study. (1-3 s.h.) Guided readings, research, and individual project work under the direction of faculty. Prerequisites: LIS620 (formerly LIS557), 600, 650, 640, and 615 and a type of library course (LIS653, 655, 656, 657). Students must also have at least a "B" average in their graduate course work, and prior approval of the Department Chair.
INDEPENDENT STUDY POLICY
Independent studies offer students the opportunity to make an in-depth study of a topic in library and information studies which is not covered by a regular course in the graduate curriculum of the University. These studies are not designed to substitute for regular course work. No more than 3 credit hours for independent study may be earned in any one semester, and not more than 6 hours of independent study credit may count toward satisfying the minimum requirements for the master's degree.
All independent studies are to be completed by the final day of classes during the semester of registration. Grades are assigned (A, B, C, F). Incomplete grades (I) are allowed only under unusual circumstances beyond the student's control and must be removed within 6 months of the last day of the semester the incomplete is received (see Graduate School Bulletin for complete policy statement). One copy of the final report/product must be submitted to the Department Chair.
The student assumes the major responsibility for conducting the independent study with the guidance of a Department of Library and Information Studies faculty member. All independent studies are expected to include a review of the literature of librarianship in the selected area, as well as literature from any related fields. Final presentations in whatever agreed upon format, must meet professional standards. While there is no official Independent Study class meeting time, regular class meetings may be scheduled to facilitate faculty-student conferences and reporting. Use of email communication is encouraged.
PROCEDURES
1. A student wishing to enroll in independent study should begin by completing the Independent Study Application Form at least one month before the anticipated beginning of the study. The form includes a list of possible topics and faculty instructors.
2. The student should then submit the Application Form to the Department Chair who will approve a faculty member to direct the topic chosen.
3. The Department Chairperson after approving the topic and instructor will forward the application to the faculty member. Once approved, the actual work on completion of the study may begin as arranged.
4. The student and assigned faculty instructor will then reach final agreement on the topic, the approach, the format of the final presentation/product, and the timeline. Communication may be in person, by phone, or electronic means. The Independent Stud y Proposal Form, the timeline, and the Permission to Register for Directed-Independent Study form should then be completed by the student, approval signed by the faculty instructor, and submitted to the Administrative Secretary. Copies should be kept by b oth the student and the faculty instructor.
5. To register, the student should complete regular registration materials.
