Mission: Consociating People, Information and Libraries
Goal 1: The LIS department provides a learning environment
that is current and relevant and reflects the theoretical foundations
of information studies.
Objective 1.1: Instruction aligns with national and state standards and
professional competencies as stated by professional organizations:
Objective 1.2: The program accommodates a diversity of interests in the
information professions.
Objective 1.3: The effectiveness of instruction is evaluated using a variety
of
measures.
Objective 1.4: The program prompts periodic reflections on the part of
students.
Objective 1.5: The program advocates professional guidelines and supports
core
values concerning the social, ethical, and service responsibilities of
librarians and information professionals.
Objective 1.6: Students demonstrate integration of theory and practice.
Goal 2: Graduates are prepared to enter the profession as effective
and innovative library leaders, information professionals, and skilled
users of technology.
Objective 2.1: Students will receive adequate and effective academic advisement
to successfully complete the MLIS program.
Objective 2.2: The department provides assistance to students and graduates
seeking employment.
Objective 2.3: Students are offered opportunities to explore librarianship
in a variety of environments.
Goal 3: The program promotes diversity (gender, multicultural,
multilingual, and multiethnic).
Objective 3.1: The demographics of the student population in the program
will approximate that of the graduate student population at The University
of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Objective 3.2: The department is committed to recruiting a diverse faculty.
Objective 3.3: Library and information services to diverse client groups
will be reflected in the LIS curriculum.
Goal 4: The department promotes and encourages research in library
and information studies.
Objective 4.1: Members of the department will contribute to the knowledge
base of the field.
Objective 4.2: Department members will collaborate and encourage research
with students, alumni, and other faculty members at UNCG and other institutions.
Objective 4.3: Faculty members will actively participate in professional
associations to remain current with trends and best practices.
Goal 5: The department builds a professional community based on
inclusion that transcends geography, ethnicity, or specialization.
Objective 5.1: The department will assure that educational opportunity
is equitable to students at all sites where the program is offered.
Objective 5.2: The department will build a comprehensive learning community.
