Pamela Barron, Associate Professor, earned her doctorate, advanced masters and M.L.S. from the Florida State University. Her dissertation topic was the characterization of Native Americans in children's literature. She joined the UNCG faculty in August,1999, and has had more than 25 years experience in distance education and university teaching.
She was the content and research supervisor for "Jump Over the Moon: SharingLiterature With Children," an award-winning series of fifteen half hour broadcast quality videotapes co-produced by the University of South Carolina and the South Carolina Educational Television Network in 1982. "Jump" was the first and is still the only telecourse of its kind. It has been used by more than 500 colleges, universities, and consortia in the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, and Africa.
While teaching at the University of South Carolina, she also developed a video course on literacy, "Making Connections: Libraries, Literacy and Literature" for the Mind Extension University. As a faculty member of Florida State University' School of Information Studies, she helped pioneer their web- based course delivery, conceptualizing and teaching, four graduate level, totally web-based courses.
Her work experience has been in youth services in school and public libraries. Notable publications include two textbooks designed for the "Jump" telecourse, as well as "Writers for Writing for Young Adults," and "Managing and Analyzing Your Collections: A Practical Guide for Small Libraries and School Media Centers." She and Dr. Carol Doll from the Stae University of New York at Albany are currently writing a text for Young Adult Literature.
She is an active member of the Association for Library Services to Children of the American Library Association, having served on the 1990 Caldecott Award Committee, the 1992 Notable Books Committee, the 1996 Newbery Award Committee, the 1997-1998 Notable Computer Software Committee, and the 1999-2001 Notable Children's Video Committee. She was the chair of the 2004 Carnegie Award Committee.
Her special interests are information services to children and young adults, distance education, family literacy, intellectual freedom, storytelling, filmmaking, and folklore. Pam's father was a colonel in the US Army and her childhood was spent traveling. She experienced firsthand the cultures of Germany and Taiwan, spending three years in Germany and two in Taiwan.
She has a daughter who majored in geographic information systems and who lives inCharlotte, NC. Pam's personal interests include camping, photography, contra dancing, La Ho Chi, making jewelry, and traveling to study the spiritual practices and folklore of indigenous cultures. She is an ordained minister and has studied with Quero shaman in Peru, with a woodcarver in Bali, and in Java with Jean Houston, author of Jump Time: Shaping Your Future in a World of Radical Change. So far, her favorite place to visit is Bali.
