LIS student chosen as 2008-9 ALA Spectrum Scholar!

LIS student Melinda Livas has been chosen as one of 69 recipients of the 2008-2009 American Library Association Spectrum Scholarship. In addition to the $5,000 scholarship, Melinda, who is a member of our Charlotte cohort, will also have the opportunity to participate the Spectrum Scholar Institute in Chicago July 6-8, 2009. The Institute is a 3-day workshop that focuses on leadership and features a number of well-known leaders in the library field. Scholars also receive free student admission to the ALA Annual Conference, which takes place July 9-15 in Chicago. The scholarship also has many more benefits, including formal and informal mentoring, opportunities to present at conferences, and much more! Congratulations, Melinda! We are proud of you!
The Spectrum Scholarship Program was created by ALA in 1997 in an effort to recruit members of under-represented groups and bring much-needed diversity to the profession. Since its inception, 564 Spectrum Scholarships have been awarded.
