Admission Requirements

Admission decisions are made by the Admissions Committee based on the applicant's previous academic record, GRE test scores, references, and personal commitment as indicated in the applicant's personal statement.

Previous Academic Record

A Bachelor's degree from a recognized accredited college or university is required. (Two official copies of all applicable transcripts must be submitted to the Graduate School), as well as an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale during the last two years of study.

In lieu of the above requirements, the Admissions Committee may consider an applicant's record of successful previous graduate study. Factors to be considered include institution and accreditation, program of study and courses taken, number of credits earned, and GPA.

Test Scores

Scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) must be submitted. GRE scores up to five years old will be accepted.
* Foreign students are required to submit scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

References and Personal Commitment

A minimum of three letters of reference are required from teachers, supervisors, or other persons who are in a position to assess qualifications and professional potential (download form).
A resume and a statement of personal and professional goals must be submitted. Additional criteria that may be considered by the Admissions Committee include:

  • Demonstrated maturity of prospective student with low undergraduate GPA and/or unusual aptitude for graduate study as indicated by scores on the Graduate Record Examination General Test.
  • Strong references from supervisors.
  • Socioeconomic background.
  • Successful experience working in relevant fields.
  • Undergraduate course work which includes an undue proportion of vocational work or
  • Knowledge of foreign languages,
  • Knowledge of formal sciences (e.g., mathematics, statistics, logic, computer science), and
  • Probable contributions to the educational enrichment of the program.

All applications are reviewed by the Admissions Committee.  On the basis of this review, the LIS Department recommends one of the following actions on the application:
a. admit,
b. admit provisionally,* or
c. do not admit.
The Graduate School notifies applicants of action taken.

* Provisional admission may be granted to promising applicants who do not meet all the formal requirements, or to applicants from non-accredited institutions. Students must meet any special conditions attached to their admission within twelve (12) semester hours of graduate credit.

Computer Competency
Students entering the M.L.I.S. program are expected to have familiarity with basic computing and Internet operations, and must submit a computer competency form with their application. Download the computer competency checklist, to be submitted with your application here.

Advising
Each new student is assigned a faculty adviser who is concerned with the student's special needs or interests.  Students should consult with their faculty adviser each semester before enrolling in any courses, to plan a program of study and to seek advice concerning job opportunities and professional paths.

Off-Campus Programs (see also Distance Education)

The LIS Department delivers the MLIS degree via the NC-REN network to the UNC-Charlotte campus.  Each semester at least one course is transmitted from Greensboro to Charlotte and Asheville.  This system is video/audio interactive allowing instant communication with the instructor.  Enrollment and payment of course fees for the Charlotte classes are administered by the UNC Greensboro LIS Department.  Students must be admitted to the Graduate School at UNCG and may register for classes on either of the two campuses, although the fee structures differ by locations.  Further details of these programs may be obtained from:
