Programs and Admission

Graduates

The UNCG Library and Information Studies program offers a curriculum that provides students with the foundational knowledge and learning skills needed to pursue a career in Library and Information Studies.

The LIS graduate program leads to the Master’s of Library and Information Studies (M.L.I.S.) degree. The program requires the completion of 36 hours, comprising 19 hours of required courses and 17 hours of electives. Students must also complete the 1 hour Capstone Experience.

Admission decisions are made by the Admissions Committee based on the applicant’s previous academic record, GRE test scores, references, and personal commitment as indicated in the applicant’s personal statement. A Bachelor’s degree from a recognized accredited college or university is required with an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale during the last 2 years of study.

Prospective students are also expected to have familiarity with basic computing and Internet operations, and must submit a Technology Competencies Checklist with their application.

General admission requirements for the Graduate School are detailed in the University’s Graduate Bulletin. Applicants to the Library and Information Studies Department must meet all University and Department standards for acceptance.

Minimal Requirements for the M.L.I.S

  • Completion of 36 semester hours of course work including core courses and electives.
  • Completion of a Portfolio as a Capstone Experience.
  • Maintenance of a “B” grade average overall.
  • Completion of all requirements within five years.

Student Program Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the program, services, resources, personnel, and facilities of libraries and other information agencies.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the ethics of the profession, including intellectual freedom and cooperation among other libraries and other information agencies.
  • Demonstrate a response to the needs of diverse populations.
  • Demonstrate essential competencies in the technology of library and information services.
  • Demonstrate how a student is able to design a research report, and critically read research reports.
  • Demonstrate how a student is able to apply theoretical concepts and problem solving methods to the solution of practical problems.
  • Demonstrate how a student is able to communicate effectively with peers, service communities, staff, and administrative bodies.
  • Demonstrate how a student is able to devise and implement a plan for professional growth.
