How are you a member of the UNCG LIS family?

I earned my MLIS in May, 2007, after two years in the LIS program, and after receiving a BA in English from UNCG in 2005.

Tell us about the accomplishments you are most proud of in terms of your academic, professional accomplishments, etc. (brag points for us to use in other words)

As a MLIS student, I was admitted to the wonderful Reference Intern Program at UNCG’s Jackson Library, thus gaining invaluable academic library experience while serving the Library’s patrons. Becoming an Intern also led, indirectly, to other opportunities: I worked as Student Assistant in the Government Documents and Cataloging departments and also served as Secretary of LISSA. The experience in Cataloging, in turn, helped me obtain a professional position here as Electronic Resources and Metadata Cataloger. In that capacity, I have assisted in position design, interviewing, and training for our new Cataloging Graduate Assistantship. I am also proud to be part of the Planning Committee for the upcoming Post-MLS Diversity Residency – another promising partnership between Jackson Library and the LIS Department.

Give us a brief bio of yourself including your educational and professional background.

I was born and raised in southeastern Ohio. As a young adult, I discovered the mellow climate, beautiful landscapes, and pleasant society of the Greensboro area and never looked back! I’ve been a nursing assistant, a clerical worker in medical offices, a full-time mother of three (now teen-aged) boys, a performer of international folk dance, and an aerobics instructor. In 1995 I finally realized I would be a librarian when I grew up. I enrolled at UNCG in 1997. In 2005 I received a BA in English, with minors in Spanish and in Women’s and Gender Studies, Honors in English, Summa cum laude status, Phi Beta Kappa, and an admission to the Graduate School and the MLIS program. It took me ten years, but here I am!

Do you have a favorite saying or motto you live by? If not, please give us a concise one or two sentence blurb.

-If not now … when?
-I love coincidences because they’re not. If you expect life to have meaning, it does.
-Listen to your fears and confront them: doing things that scare me has made me stronger, wiser, and less fearful.

What role does your education and/or professional position play in applying library and information studies for the benefit of others and society in general?

As a member of UNCG Libraries’ Cataloging department, I’m part of a team that works to make the Libraries’ resources accessible to the University community. It means a great deal to me that I can thus contribute to the education of today’s young adults. I believe passionately in the value of education in broadening minds, expanding opportunities, and connecting individuals to the vast body of literature and learning that make up the collective intelligence of our human species.

Favorite food and drink:

Impossible to say; I seldom listen to music but when I do, my tastes are extremely eclectic and favorites change by the moment.
