How are you a member of the UNCG LIS family?
I am a first-year student planning to concentrate in Academic Libraries.
Tell us about the accomplishments you are most proud of in terms of your academic, professional accomplishments, etc. (brag points for us to use in other words)
I have only been in this program for about 2 months, so I don’t really have anything to brag about here…I am a member of LISSA and I’m also on the Admissions Committee. As an undergraduate, the accomplishment I’m most proud of is winning the 2007 Peyton Ward Williams, Jr. Distinguished Writing Award for a paper that I wrote for one of my English courses. The paper dealt with Irish literature, one of my favorite subjects, and it was extremely rewarding to be recognized for something that I love!
Give us a brief bio of yourself including your educational and professional background.
I graduated from Mississippi State University in May 2007 with a B.A. in English and a minor in Spanish, and then I came here!
Do you have a favorite saying or motto you live by? If not, please give us a concise one or two sentence blurb.
“The best way to get ahead is to get started.” This is for all of us procrastinators out there…
What role does your education and/or professional position play in applying library and information studies for the benefit of others and society in general?
Like many librarians, I have a strong desire to connect people and information. As an English major, I experienced first-hand how information can broaden your view of the world and force you to rethink conceptions that you may have about a person or a culture. I think that information is incredibly important to the creation of a society of mutual respect and understanding. My position as a librarian will not allow me to change misconceptions personally, but I can play a role in providing information that represents all viewpoints.
